Student Organization

There is no application process to become a “Carolina First” student. All first-generation college students currently enrolled at UNC are considered “Carolina Firsts.” However, students are welcome to become more involved with the Carolina Firsts Student Organization. We have approximately 12 students who support the Office of Undergraduate Retention and work closely with Dr. Huerta-Bapat throughout the year.

As a member of the Carolina Firsts Student Organization, you will be part of organizing and shaping the four current “Carolina Firsts” Signature Events:

  • Week of Welcome Dinner Reception
  • Family Weekend
  • Homecoming Celebration
  • Carolina Firsts Graduation Recognition and Pinning Ceremony

In addition to helping with the implementation of these events, members organize our “First Gen Friday” social activities, which take place the first Friday of every month. These events are intended to bring Carolina’s first-generation college students together, create a sense of community, and provide a place for them to share their experiences, reflect on their accomplishments and enjoy each other’s company. They are usually centered around a fun activity such as carving pumpkins for Halloween, hanging out with a therapy dog before finals, or getting ready for Spring!

During the beginning of the semester, the student organization accepts nominations for potential candidates and conducts an interview process to select the members of the executive council.

If you are interested in being part of this student-run organization, please contact Carmen Gonzalez.
